If it is mechanical part then the possibility of it getting damage is definite. Brakes often get loose and if gets unnoticed it lead to brake failure which is a very risky issue. We have seen many instance of car is involved in an accident because of brake failure. We can always have a check but as we know, the tragedy never knocks before it comes.

A well tuned braking system has to be ensured especially during the long drives in order to prevent any kind of misfortune. Incase of any emergency the first and foremost thing to do is act practically. Keep in mind certain points that will help you at the time of brake failure.
Be alarmed but never get tensed as the decision taken during fear will never be right. Always be practical in your thoughts. Try to think of the ways to avoid any kind of massive dangerous. If possible try to move into an empty location. If you are in a crowded lane then try to pass on some signal and also ensure that the other vehicles on the road are not affected.
It is always recommended and safer to blinkers or indicators as this is a simple way of alarming other passerby.
The ideal thinking would be taking the complete control from the accelerator as this will help in reducing the speed of the car. Also bring down the gear to the lowest and just control the steering wheel.
Once you have reached to a safer mode try to implement the parking brake until the car is come to arrest. But if there is complete brake failure then try to stop the car direct the car onto a soft shoulder to slow down. 
Keep moving the steering from left to right as it helps in slowing down the car. But be careful and see that it is safe. 
If you have succeeded in parking, keep some reflective triangles or warning flags alerting others.

Incase the car is running on highway and the brake is failed here are few tips to reduce risk.
Take your foot off the accelerator pedal. This is to ensure that not one is hit rashly.
Always navigate towards the article that is least dangerous. For example: wooden fence, bush etc. Try to keep away from harder objects like trees, or lamp-posts. 
Always have a control on handbrakes and keep using it so that the car is under control as it trying to stop. 
Incase the handbrake is broken, then bring down to the lowest gear as this lets the gearbox take even more of the speed. This method is extremely controllable and effective braking than the hand braking.
