The BMW X6 SUV: Is It a 4x4 Too Far?

The recipe for the BMW X6 seems quite simple, take the mechanics, size and stature of a 4x4 and then combine it with the body shell of a coupe, which is designed to seat four people. Surely however, if you have gone through the expense of buying and running a large SUV you would expect that it could carry more people than an averaged sized hatchback. Especially when Volvo XC90 does the job of carrying seven people so well.

Nevertheless BMW believe that the X6 offers the latest evolution in sports utility vehicles combining dynamic excellence with driver enjoyment, and designed to take on rivals in the form of the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes ML63. From the outside the BMW X6 is certainly an imposing sight with its large 20 inch alloy wheels, powerful xenon headlights, and sleek coupe style body. This is a vehicle sure to stand out on the road, especially when you consider it is wider and longer than the more conventional BMW X5.

There is no getting around the fact that the BMW X6 is a very large 4x4, that will dwarf most vehicles on the road, and perhaps will not be the most subtle way to travel in the current troubled economic climate. However it is also true to say that BMW has introduced a new type of 4x4 and created a stylish and smart looking vehicle, that despite its size and weight handles and looks more like the four door coupe that it was designed around than a standard SUV.

This old 1964 classic car was primer gray with a black driver's door and if you wanted to turn off the heat you had to go under the car and remove a flexible duct to stop the inflow because the controls inside the car were broken.

This classic car was quirky to the max!

I had a book that was popular to a certain extent in it's day written by John Muir - Volkswagen Guru called "How to keep your Volkswagen Alive - A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot". That fit me pretty good because I was certainly close to a compleat idiot. Gotta' love the spelling of "compleat".

I read the book and began the process of changing my oil. On a VW Bug, you have to remove 5 bolts to get to a screen that acted like an oil filter and let the oil drain from there. There is no oil drain plug like a "regular" automobile.

The process takes a few minutes longer than a standard car but it's not a real pain at all and for a first timer, it was actually a rewarding experience.

That car died one day as I was driving to work... the engine caught fire. I'm assuming that a fuel line broke and spilled gas onto the hot engine. I stopped the car, grabbed a few things, hopped out and watched my 400.00 VW Beetle call it a day.

If that car was alive today it would be an antique classic for sure.

Differences Between The 1964 And A Half Mustang And The 1965 Mustang

With all the confusion over differences between the 1964 and a half Mustang and the 1965 model it can be very tough to identify them. The issue is that all Mustangs from the very beginning of production back on March 9th of 1964 use the identifier "5," standing for the year 1965, in their VIN. Technically there is no "1964 Mustang" however collectors and enthusiasts refer to those cars built from March 9th to August 17th of 1964 of that year as "1964 and a half" Mustangs. Another variation is to call these cars "early 1965s" and the cars built after the above period "late 1965s."

As far as Ford is concerned they simply had roughly 18 months of production on the 1965 model. What's the big deal about the August 17 date? That was the day that Ford shut down the two Mustang plants (in Dearborn, MI. and San Jose, CA.) were shut down for retooling. It was at this point that most agree that anything that can be called a 1964 and a half Mustang stopped being produced and the 1965 Mustang production began.

The most glaring and easily recognizable change from before and after the retooling was the switch from a generator system to an alternator system. The real problems with identification come from the phasing in and out of various parts and components over several months. As the original parts used at the very beginning ran out they were replaced with more standardized versions after the "Great Retooling."

There is an issue when trying to determine exactly what a 1964 and a half really is. In fact some of the early 1965 models are assembled using some or many of the "early" 1964 parts. It can be confusing to say the least. There are, however, a few well accepted guidelines in determining year on these cars. (Either way, be prepare for a discussion when this comes up at the next car show.

When discussing this issue there are two sets or groups of parts that are talked about. These are generally referred to as "1964" or "early" parts, or those that were used at the beginning of production starting in March of '64, and "later parts" or those that came into use after the 1964 parts were exhausted. Keep in mind that some 1964 parts were used on some of the 1965 model year cars until the supply ran out.

A few of the very easiest differences to spot are handy to know when looking for a car to purchase or out at the local car show:

a) The first spot to look is at the corners of the cars hood at the front. The 1964 and a half Mustang had a beveled edge that set into a groove as opposed to the more finished looking "pinched" or "crimped" method use on the 1965 Mustang.

b) Passenger seats on the '64 were fixed, or in other words not meant to adjust or slide backwards and forward. The 1965 model had adjustable passenger seats.

c) The door locks are color keyed to the interior color of the car on the 1964 and while in the 1965 model they were chromed.

d) The gas tank cap will not have a holding wire on a '64 while it will on a 1965.

e) There are no Fastbacks that are considered 1964 and a half models. There may be a few of the early Fastbacks assembled with left over 1964 parts however it is widely accepted that Ford never built a Fastback prior to August 17th 1964.

f) The pedals on the 1964 were not made to accept a metal trim piece and therefore will not have the indentations around the edge you'll see on the 1965's.

g) The rule is a Mustang with the D, F, or U engine designation is considered a definite 1964 model. Those with engine codes of either C or K were used in the 1964 and 1965 model so are of little use in identifying.

h) The '64 and 's had a center position off switch for the heater.

These are just some of the most obvious, easily seen and most accepted differences between the 1964 and a half Mustang and the 1965. It's an interesting bit of automobile history and a lot of fun to look into.

1965 Mustang Shelby Gt

With the introduction of the Ford Mustang in the middle of 1964 there was a nation wide sensation. This was of course due to the nature of the car design however the manner in which the media was handled and the marketing blitz that took place before, during, and after the official launch. A huge turnout in positive newspaper reviews, numbering the thousands, and an appearance as the Official Pace Car of the 1964 Indianapolis 500 coupled with an attractive purchase price of around $2,300 launched the Mustang into the American automotive limelight.

1965 was the first full official year of production of the Mustang. In addition to the primary Coupe design several variations on this model were available on the 1965 Mustang. For example Ford introduced a Fastback model for the Mustang that year to augment the existing hardtop coupe and the convertible. Two famous variations on the Mustang appeared in 1965 as well. The famed Shelby Mustang first appeared at this time. A Shelby Mustang in 1956 was a Fastback model with no rear seat. The spare tire was located in the back in the area of the rear window and the gas tank flap had the Mustang icon on it. They also added some more power to the 289 engine getting it up to a 306. The second variation was the 1965 Mustang GT introduced in the second quarter of that year and at a cost an additional $165! The GT option was available on the coupe, convertible or fastback models and came with a few variations of its own. As for the power train there was a choice between a 225 horsepower or a 271 horsepower V-8 engine.

Another choice to be made was between a three or four speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission called the Cruise-O-Matic. All GT packages came with an upgraded instrument group, striping on the lower part of the body sides. Finished out with "GT" badges on the front fenders, large fog lights mounted inside the front grill and a dual exhaust the 1965 Mustang GT really stood out! While the Shelby and GT packages got a lot of attention during 1965 the coupe body style was what really sold. The Ford Motor Company had first anticipated sales of the 1965 Mustang to be some where around the 100,000 and let's just say they sold a few more than that!

The Mustang was produced to compete in the emerging muscle car segment at the time. There are some people who jump from sanding directly on to the base coat and might suffer later, as if you start with base coating without washing it, then after completing the first base coat, you will find small particles on it. Therefore, wash gently all the parts before you start painting.

For washing purpose, you can use any common soap or dishwashing detergents which are commonly available in the market. You can also use a scrub or a hard brush with these soap or detergent. A scrub or a hard brush will also remove the old paint left during the sanding process.

D. Just Right: One final check. Reach back to the back of the helmet and try to rotate the helmet as far down and forward as possible. Then do the same as far backward as possible. Caring for your motorcycle chain won't just prolong its life; it will mean your bike will ride as smoothly as it should too.

Chain lubrication should be carried out roughly every 500km or so, so if you're a weekday commuter then simply make it part of your weekly maintenance schedule, while dirt bike riders should give it a once over each and every ride.

A well lubricated chain will ward off corrosion, run quieter and last longer, and it will prolong the life of your sprockets too, so it's well worth the effort. A variety of different brands of chain spray are available, but go for a wax-based type of spray - these tend to cling better, with more of the lubricant sticking to your chain, rather than all over your wheel and swingarm.

If you've got a road bike with a centrestand you'll find lubricating your chain takes seconds - simply put the bike on the centrestand on level ground, engage neutral and spin the wheel around while you spray a decent coating of lubricant onto your chain.

If you don't have a centrestand, like if you've got a sportsbike, you can always buy a race stand that performs the same job - you'll need one to easily and effectively adjust your chain anyway, and they're a help in motorcycle maintenance and cleaning in general, so whatever way you look at it it's a good investment. Similarly, dirt bike owners will need a dirt bike stand - these use a small amount of leverage to lift the bike up from under its engine.

Winter Motorcycle Storage Tips

It's that time of year again, the nights are drawing in, the roads are covered with wet leaves and you're starting to think a canoe would be more practical than a motorcycle right now. It may only be the start of winter, but we've already had floods and our first snow. As reluctant as you may be to admit it, it's probably time to put the motorcycle into hibernation for the winter.

However, before you shut it away in the garage for the next few months, it may be worth taking a little time just making sure its comfy and more importantly, going to be good-to-go as soon as the weather picks up. Here are just a few simple tips to ensure that your motorcycle will be ready to go the second you are.

First up, take it for one last ride. Any niggling noises you've been ignoring or anything that doesn’t feel right should be addressed now. Once the motorcycle is warmed up, any condensation from the exhaust will evaporate too. On your way back top up the fuel tank. Half empty tanks are a great place for moisture to build up which coupled with any exposed metal could damage your bike. Once you're back home, top the engine up with some fuel stabilizer and run the motorcycle for a few minutes to allow it to work its way round, even if your motorcycle doesn’t have carburettors, a fuel stabilizer will stop any compounds from the fuel tank breaking up and damaging your engine.

Changing the oil and filter is very important too; any acid compounds developed by the oil will need to be flushed out. As this oil will need to be drained before you next ride, it doesn’t need to be the most expensive oil on the market. Submerging some of the more sensitive parts of your motorcycle, like the bearings, in oil will help prevent corrosion. Remember that any excess oil has to be drained before starting the engine as too much oil can damage the engine just as much as too little oil. You will also need to top up the antifreeze. If you're able; drain the float plugs. Alternatively, if a stabilizer is added to the fuel and run through the system this should work just as well. Before you put your motorcycle into storage, you will also need to lube the chain, if left; the chain can corrode and rust. Remember to keep any lubricants away from the breaks or tyres, assuming you want to stop without the aid of a tree next time you try to break. Any other exposed metal is going to need some WD40 to prevent any rust and corrosion.

It may sound obvious, but give the bike a good clean. This will enable you to notice anything out of the ordinary as well as removing any dirt or grime which could damage the motorcycle over the winter months, just remember not to put it away whilst it's still wet. If there's anything worth repairing or maintaining this is a great time to get it out of the way, so that in the spring the motorcycle will be ready to go as soon as the weather permits. Chances are with most motorcycles these days everything will be ok, but your motorcycle maybe close to a valve adjustment or something similar and now is a great time to get that done.

Next you'll have to remove the battery, especially if your motorcycle is going to be left to brave the elements outside all winter. Batteries contain water which can freeze and expand, this can cause the battery to crack and once it melts it can then leak. If you can, leave your battery hooked up to a small charge for the winter. A battery tender will give it just the charge it needs without letting it over charge. If you leave your battery alone to stand in your bike all winter, you'll have trouble even getting to the shop to buy a new one!

All that's left now is to find somewhere nice and dry to store you motorcycle. Ideally your bike would prefer to be left in a garage but if that's not possible try and make sure it's covered. It is worth bearing in mind though, if its left with a cover outside, condensation could build up and you'll have a very impressive pile of rust to take on your first ride out in the spring. If you're going to have to leave your motorcycle outside make sure it's secure and preferably out of sight. Nothing says challenge like an unattended motorcycle with nothing more than a glorified keychain round it. If you can, leave your motorcycle on a stand as this will take any weight from the suspension.

Well that's it, time to relegate yourself to the car for the next few months. Next time you're at a loose end on a bright clear Sunday afternoon, refrain yourself from taking your bike for a quick mid winter spin, you'll only end up creating condensation in the engine, instead get on with a bit of routine maintenance.

One of the most enduring scenes in cinema is in the classic film Roman Holiday. The film starred the immortal and ever beautiful Audrey Hepburn (Oh how I love her!) and the talented Gregory Peck. Hepburn played a princess who was visiting Rome for a state visit. Tired of her strictly regimented life, she escaped the confines of her embassy, disguised herself as a commoner and began touring the streets of Rome. There she met Gregory Peck who played an American correspondent in Italy. The movie was basically a sight-seeing tour of the streets and Rome, but it is very memorable because they both toured the scenic spots in a Vespa scooter.

This singular scene catapulted the Vespa as a cultural icon. Though the movie was not really what you call a happy ending for they both did not end up with each other (oops sorry for ruining the plot to those who have not seen it), generations of girls dream of becoming Audrey Hepburn being swept away by their own Gregory Peck driving into the sunset in their very own Vespa.

Vespa scooters have their cult following. Like the Volkswagen or the Mini Cooper, Vespas are liked because of their unique (some consider cute as the more appropriate description) design. Vespa’s design was derived from wasps hence the name. As a matter of fact, wasp if translated into Italian is called vespa. The Vespa was first made after world war two and since then its design saw little deviations. Scooters are perfect for the old narrow and cobbled Roman streets. It reflects the olden times when people are gentler, the days seemed slower and the air was full of romanticism. From those famed cobbled streets Vespa spread throughout the world. Perhaps because this little mode of transportation is perfect for weaving in and out in today’s heavily congested roads or perhaps Italians are really talented designers of vehicles. (I am sure most of you will agree with me on this point. I have yet to meet somebody who finds the highly desirable and exotic Ferrari sports cars as ugly.)

Ever since I had seen a Vespa in Roman Holiday, I always wanted to buy one for myself. There were only two problems that presented themselves to me. First, there is no Vespa being sold in our region and second, even if there are Vespas in our island, I cannot afford one. The closest things that resemble a Vespa in our place are the delivery scooters of Yellow Cab Pizza. I even joked to my cousin that we should steal one, remove the delivery compartment at the back and repaint it with any color not yellow. I would even dream of accessorizing them with parts from scooter, but of course I know that all this will just be a dream to me. These cruisers and touring bikes start at $15,000 and with accessories and customization can easily run $20,000 or more. Fortunately, like Harley-Davidsons, a well-maintained Yamaha can keep its value year after year. Many older models sell for more than new bikes.

But in contrast, Yamaha scooters are very economical. On the low end you could spend as little as $2000 dollars for a brand new Yamaha scooter. But on the high end you could spend as much as $8000 to $9000 dollars. The higher end models have more bells and whistles. It doesn’t matter if you’re tall or short, younger or older, if you want to ride your own motorcycle, YOU CAN! I thought I would never have my own ride. I thought I was too short, I wasn’t strong enough, and I was too old. I WAS WRONG. Here’s how I got started.

I had been riding behind my husband for probably 20 years off and on, never going anywhere in particular, and just seeing the country roads on the weekends. One day it struck me like a bolt out of the blue. I could see a whole lot more if his head wasn’t in the way! I’d has my own bike once before, but I either had to stop at a curb or have someone taller on the back. What a joke that was, not to mention dangerous. That was 1984 and I never tried to learn again after that fiasco. I just thought I was stuck on the back forever.

After my epiphany that day on the country road, I bought a 2003 Harley Superglide and just thought I could jump on and go. WRONG!! Riding responsibly and having a good time takes some preparation. I strongly recommend a motorcycle safety course, available around the country, as opposed to learning from a friend, and here’s why:

1. Everyone in the class is a new rider, so nobody laughs.

2. The instructors are experts.

3. It’s a huge confidence builder before riding with friends or relatives.

After I took my safety course I could hold up that 600+lb motorcycle, start it and take off confidently. I was ready for real street practice, and practice I did. I rode every weekend from May to August. By the end of August I was ready for a road trip. We set off for Chattanooga, Tennessee. Imagine, a brand new rider heading for the back mountain roads. What a blast!

I learned a few things on that trip, like how great a group of bikers can be and how much fun it is to just take off. I also learned what I needed to take and how to pack my gear. Saddle bags work great on a non-touring model, just slip ‘em under the seat. For a longer trip, I add a leather backpack style bag that fits over the sissy bar. A tent and sleeping bag save on room costs, too. Always remember a good leather coat, chaps and gloves because sixty degrees in the yard is a lot warmer than sixty degrees at highway speeds. Rain gear is a good idea, too. It’s nice to have some tunes on the road as well, so I carry an MP3 player and ear buds. A digital camera is a must if you want to remember the ride and the great people you met, and if you just can’t get away from cyberspace, a laptop and Wi-Fi signal detector are really handy.

So, ladies, there you have it. If you think you’re too short, or too old, or too whatever, remember this; I’m 5’2”, I got my first real motorcycle at 43, and I’m nowhere near ready to quit riding.

Your amplifier takes the signal from your head unit and makes it big enough to be able to drive your speakers. It is preferable to use separate amps for high and low frequencies but it is not necessary. The problem with using one amp for all frequencies is that you cannot adjust the levels among different frequency ranges as easily as you can adjust outputs of separate amps. Many people begin their system with an amplifier for the low frequencies (bass) and use their head units built-in power to drive the higher frequency speakers. This is enough but the built-in power in a head unit is usually not strong enough for high volume listening and not clean enough for the discerning ear. There are lots of choices when choosing an amplifier.

Things to look for:
RMS Power: The power output of an amplifier should be roughly matched to what the amp will be used for and what speakers it will be driving. Oddly enough, the most regular problem with matching speakers and amps is using an amp that is too weak to power the speaker. When an underpowered amp is used to power a speaker, the listener tends to turn the volume up higher in order to get more output of the amplifier. This usually leads to the amplifier running to its limit and distorting. This distortion can cause the output from the amplifier to become DC for short periods of time and DC signals of even low power can damage a speaker. Under powering a speaker in this way can be more dangerous than overpowering it! Also greater power is usually needed when powering subwoofers because of their greater size and excursion. Do not plan on using an amp of less than 75watts per channel to drive a subwoofer. The converse holds true for higher frequencies (midrange and treble) only 25-50watts per channel are needed to drive speakers in those frequency ranges, however more power will not hurt, it just probably will not be used. Another factor in power output is stability in low resistance loads. It is possible to wire mutiple subwoofers to a single channel on an amplifier but the amp will have to work harder to drive this kind of load. Many affordable priced amps can drive loads as low as 2 ohms or less, with 4 ohms being the typical load of a single speaker.

Power Supply Regulation: The power supply in an amplifier converts the 12volt DC that is available in your car's electrical system to something the amp can use to produce greater power. Several designs are used by manufacturers today. Two categories are regulated and unregulated. A regulated supply produces the same power regardless of whether your car's electrical system voltage sags (which a capacitor will help prevent). An unregulated supply's power output depends directly on the input voltage. This causes changes in the maximum output power with changes in the car's electrical system. I recommend getting an amp with a regulated power supply so power output will be constant regardless of input voltage changes. This changes if you have a stiffening capacitor or another regulation device (Accumatch) to smooth out your car's electrical system. In this case, buy an amp with an unregulated supply. Some cheap amps use unregulated supplies to save money but provide none of the benefits of a regular unregulated supply. One way to determine whether an amp has a regulated supply or not is to view the power output specs for 12volt and 14.4volt inputs. If they are the same then the amp probably has a regulated supply otherwise it has an unregulated one.

Tri-Mode: A few amps can play in what is called "tri-mode." In this mode, 2 channels are used to drive a pair of high frequency speakers and one subwoofer. The subwoofer receives power from both channels. This is a very efficient way to use an amp for more than one purpose. A special crossover is required to separate the two ranges of frequencies and it should have a way of adjusting the output level between the high frequency speakers and the subwoofer. This is a good way to save some money.

Other Specs: THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is a specification that often shows up with the power output spec. An example would be "45wattsx2 @ 0.01% THD" This spec says that at an output level of 45watts into each channel the THD will be no more than 0.01%. At times manufacturers will quote the power spec at a THD of 1%. Be wary of this, 1% THD is low quality and either implies that the amp is not very good or that the manufacturer is artificially increasing the power output spec by running the amp into a higher distortion region where it does produce more power but more distortion as well. Either way it is a sign of a low amp or marketing that deceives. Anything lower than 0.1% is negligible.

Built-in Crossovers: These allow you to use the amp to only amplify certain frequencies and dedicate the amp to a subwoofer or some other specialized speaker. By using an amplifier's built-in crossover you eliminate the need for a separate one which can save you quite a bit of money.

Pre-amp Outputs: Some amps have pre-amp outputs which allow you to "daisy-chain" multiple amps together without splitting the pre-amp output from your head unit. Also, if the amp has a built-in crossover, you can use it to drive another amp.

With a sealed enclosure of predetermined volume, we can also predict the cut-off frequency and Q* of the system.

Sealed enclosures will also forgive minor mistakes in design (up to 10 percent), without major effects on sonic performance.

The real advantage is that they just consume less space, not to mention they're simpler to design and construct.

Ported enclosures are very close to a sealed enclosure in construction, but feature an additional opening for an attached port. This allows the rear-radiated energy to be phase inverted (matched in time) and to become in phase with the energy from the front of the speaker cone, essentially doubling the effective cone area.

The main disadvantage with a ported enclosure is that the design and construction are not very forgiving of mistakes. Unlike a sealed box, you must determine a number of parameters: the box volume, tuned frequency, port area, and port length. But, the advantage is great - you'll get more output with the same number and size of woofers.

However, with all of that extra output there's always a trade off. More bass naturally means more space.

You're probably thinking, can a ported enclosure sound as well a sealed enclosure? The answer is, yes, but it's different in that it will have a slight peak around the tuning frequency (35 Hz) and roll off very quickly. Both types of enclosures have true supporters. What you use really boils down to your application and how they load in your vehicle.

How much space are you willing to give up?
Now, that you've clarified your music tastes, you'll need to decide which one of the enclosures will fit your needs and your vehicle.

Before you make your purchase, it's also a key to find out how much air space and what type of enclosure is required for your dream woofers. Most manufacturers will have both specifications for sealed and ported applications. This information can be found several ways: through your local dealer, via the Internet, or by calling the manufacturer's technical department. When in doubt, ask your dealer to help you determine the best woofer(s) for your application.

How much money should you spend?
This can vary according to your personal needs. Many believe that the more you spend, the greater the bass you'll get.
